In recent years, people with a chronic disease have used their savings more often than before. They are also creating more debt. This is mainly because they are deteriorated financially harder the last few years compared with the average income in the Netherlands. In 2011 almost a fifth (19 percent) of the chronically ill used their savings, in 2014 this had risen to 28 percent, according to a report of research institute Nivel.
