Introducing new colleague Frank Cobelens program leader APH

From July 1st 2017 Frank Cobelens (MD, PhD) will join APH as program leader Global Health

I head the Department of Global Health at the Academic Medical Center, and chair the Executive Board of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD), a collaboration between the AMC, the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences of the University of Amsterdam en de Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of VU University. My scientific background is in epidemiology and control of infectious disease with strong emphasis on poverty-related diseases, notably tuberculosis.

The main ambition I have is to get Amsterdam firmly on the map as a center for research, education and policy development in Global Health. By linking the expertise, creativity and global networks available within the Alliance, APH and AIGHD, but also various non-academic organizations in the Amsterdam area, we can address health problems of global significance and through our scientific work and education contribute to effective, affordable and equitable solutions. I believe that this can only be meaningfully achieved through interdisciplinary approaches that look at Global Health issues through different but complementary lenses, including biomedical science, social science and economics. APH can be a major contributor to achieving these goals by providing a platform for researchers and facilitating scientific discourse and collaborations around Global Health within the Alliance.
