CaRe Days 2 and 3 April 2025

The CaRe Days 2025 took place on 2 and 3 April in Eindhoven.
With over 180 participants the CaRe Days were well attended!
This year's theme was:

Celebrating 30 years Research School CaRe
Learning from the past, Exploring the future

Prof Hilde Verbeek started the first day with an interactive session:
"Recognition & Rewards: Develop your own career."

Thursday, 3 April, Prof Giridhara R Babu held a keynote titled:
"India's moment in Global Health; Lessons Learnt, Readiness Earnt."

Prof. Hugh Montgomery, our visiting professor, held a keynote about climate change and health and specifically referred to a non-profit organisation called Real Zero. Real Zero is dedicated to catalysing social and economic change, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the pace and scale required, as we face both a climate crisis and a health crisis. Real Zero has summarised 7 acts that we can all perform – as individuals, businesses and healthcare system.
The Dutch branch, led by Lieke van Baardewijk, will focus on three key actions in healthcare: move your money, move your energy, and eat more plant-based food. For more information contact Lieke on: Liekevanbaardewijk@realzero.earth

Founding Parents

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the founders of CaRe were put in the spotlight. Two of the founding parents were present and were interviewed by Onno van Schayck, scientific director of CaRe.

Prof Chris van Weel and Prof André Knottnerus, two of the founding parents of CaRe, were each given a figurine as a token of appreciation for their dedication to CaRe over the past 30 years.

Selma Musters (APH)
Sjim Romme (CAPHRI)

The jury said that it were three very different studies but distinctive from the others when it came to patient-person centeredness, long-term investment in population health and critical reflection on the impact of research on care and prevention.

The jury awarded Sjim Romme with the CaRe Award 2025 for his dissertation: ‘Patient involvement as a two-way street. How patients can be prepared for and benefit from involvement in healthcare professionals’ training’.

Congratulations Sjim Romme on winning the CaRe Award 2025!

News Update

Changes to the Operation of the Research School CaRe as of 2025

To all PhD candidates and researchers affiliated with CaRe,

With this letter, we would like to inform you of an important change in the operation of the Research School CaRe. Maastricht University has decided that, as of mid-2025, it will no longer make the financial resources previously allocated to the research school available to CaRe.

The CaRe board deeply regrets this decision, particularly at a time when national and international scientific collaboration in the field of public health and healthcare is becoming increasingly important. At the same time, the board and the research directors of CaRe have reaffirmed the great value of the annual gathering of PhD candidates and senior researchers associated with CaRe. Additionally, the leadership program remains a significant achievement, contributing to the international reputation that CaRe has built over the past 30 years.

However, the withdrawal of university support means that a new form of collaboration must be found for these activities, which are so vital to public health and primary care. You will be informed in due course via your institutes about the developments regarding this transition.

Kind regards,
Prof. Dr. Chris van Weel
Chair of the Executive Board of CaRe
