Letter from the director

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to update you on some important developments within our Research School CaRe.

CaRe Days 2022
As always, the meeting is the possibility to meet other CaRe researchers in your area of interest in a relaxed and friendly environment. The meeting is free but, there is a maximum number that can participate.
Please have a look at the exiting program and do not wait too long to subscribe

f you have any suggestions for CaRe, please do not hesitate to contact me, or your local director. All suggestions are more than welcome.

CaRe days 11 and 12 may

On Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May the CaRe days 2022 will be held in Eindhoven. The theme will be 'Illusion or Reality? The influence of our mind on research and practice'. Invited speakers are:

Prof. Rob van Lier

'Illusory Vision' - Everything we see is the result of a process that starts with meaningless spots of light on the retinae of our eyes. Yet, within a short period of time, the brain constructs a meaningful world with countless objects that we usually recognize almost immediately. Sometimes, however, the result of that process is rather unexpected, surprising and simply illusory. Exactly these visual illusions offer a glimpse into the underlying mechanisms. Artists and magicians know how to make use of it.

Prof. Sandra van Dulmen

'the power of words' - Words are powerful and make a difference, even more so when attending a healthcare provider. How can patients be verbally supported when treatment falls short? How are patients, more or less unintentionally, influenced by spoken and unspoken words? These and other questions will be addressed during my presentation.

Prof. Effy Vayena

'Digital public health tools: illusions and reality'

Prof. Judith Prins

'Evidence-based web-based psychological interventions for cancer survivors?' - Cancer supportive care: the right patient at the right place.

Prof. Andrea Evers

'illusion or reality: the placebo effect’ - At the interface of body and mind: the power of the placebo.

Furthermore the parallel sessions on Thursday will be hosted by:

Dr. Maartje van Stralen & Prof. Jany Rademakers

'Academic culture: ways to improve social safety and to ensure research integrity'

Prof. Roland Friele

'Societal impact of your research? Don't wait until the last Friday afternoon!'

Prof. Kay Schröder

'What you see is what you get? Utilizing data visualization for knowledge dissemination' - With the ever-increasing amount and complexity of scientific data, data visualization has become essential for analyzing data, communicating experimental results, and even for making surprising discoveries. Scientific visuals can reveal patterns, trends, and connections in data that are difficult or impossible to find any other way. In this workshop, Schröder introduces the practice of translating information into a visual context, to make data easier for the human brain to understand and pull insights from. In addition to an introduction to the basics of data visualization, this workshop also discusses the influence of cognitive perception on interpretation and the tension between data visualization and interpretation.

All researchers, junior and senior, are welcome to join. In addition to listening to our interesting speakers we will also be collaborating during these days. There is also an opportunity to present your own work. Click here to view the full program and to register. Registration is free.

Public Health and Care Research Leadership programme

This programme is designed to support future leaders in the field of public health and care research to become excellent leaders with a mission. It is a collaboration between CaRe, UMIO, Cambridge Institute of Public Health and Erasmus MC NIHES
Last year the first cohort started, this year in July the second cohort will start in Cambridge. Within the institutes a selection round has already taken place, to select candidates for cohort 2.

If you are not affiliated with one of the CaRe institutes, but you are interested in the programme, please send an email to care-secretariaat@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

For more information about the programme click here.

The mission of The Netherlands School of Public Health and Care Research concerns: contributing to better health and health care through high quality training of young researchers and multidisciplinary cooperation between excellent research institutes in the field of primary health care, transmural care, public and occupational health and health policy, focused on the development and implementation of new scientific knowledge in these fields.

This mission is shared by the four participating research institutes of CaRe, i.e. CAPHRI (Care And Public Health Research Institute) of Maastricht University, RIHS (Radboud Institute for Health Sciences) of the Radboud university medical centre, APH (Amsterdam Public Health research institute) of the VUmc, AMC, VU and UvA in Amsterdam, and Nivel (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research) in Utrecht.
